Many goods are sensitive to sudden and/or lasting changes in circumstances during storing, handling and transportation. Humidity could get too high; a shock could occur; the temperature could drop; all kinds of variables that may influence the quality of goods when they are no longer within their individual stated specs or conditions. The longer they are out of that range, the more the quality is reduced. The need to use any means to monitor a shipment can have several reasons. It may be prescribed by regulations or by law, but can also be something a company wishes to implement themselves.
Indicators Versus Recorders
We are living in 2004, a high-tech world in which people almost automatically go for recorders to give precise data when monitoring of goods is required. Recorders nowadays fulfil the need for reliable record keeping, verification and traceability, however they also have disadvantages:
