The Care of Pharmaceuticals Carried by Sea in Temperature Controlled Containers

Temperature controlled shipping containers are strongly established as a leading method of moving large volumes of sensitive products from continent to continent. Pharmaceuticals are included in the cargoes carried on many trade routes. Reliable cargo care requires a systematic approach to the needs of these cargoes by all those involved in the cold chain.

Container shipping lines have many direct scheduled services between ports. Terminals and logistics services continue to develop to support the increasing number of larger vessels in service (see Figure 1). Road transport to numerous inland destinations is available and rail services have been introduced in some countries.

Sizes of containers are defined in standards laid down by the International Standards Organization (ISO). The two main lengths for containers in Imperial units are 20ft and 40ft (1). An integral container 20ft long and 8ft 6in high has an internal capacity of about 29cuM. The increasingly popular 40ft long and 9ft 6in high highcube container has an internal capacity of about 65cuM. One 20ft container is often referred to as one TEU (20ft equivalent unit) so a 40ft unit is two TEU.
