Over the past 10 years the world has seen unprecedented economic growth and opportunity. In today's environment, globalisation, competition and consumer power have changed the way businesses compete and governments govern. However, these same drivers have also created a thriving business in the counterfeiting, alteration and piracy of branded products and valuable printed documents.
Document fraud threatens businesses large and small in the form of altered purchase orders, bills of lading, phoney invoices, prescriptions and coupons. For example, one-third of all promotional coupons redeemed in the US are false.
Furthermore, the increasing global demand for branded products has created a growing business in product counterfeiting, piracy and diversion. Worldwide, counterfeiting and piracy alone costs brand-owners over US$720 billion annually. The International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition estimates that as much as eight per cent of international trade involves counterfeit goods - and the trend is growing.
