Editor's Letter

Amidst a heatwave I'm packing light material to take on vacation, like The Axeman Cometh by John Farris. This puts me in mind of a 1961 movie I recently rented from Blockbuster video rental shop called The Choppers, which offers an interesting lesson about the road to ruin when 'take versus buy' replaces classic models of decision-making for outsourcing.

Towards the end of last year, after over two years of bear market conditions, there were signs of economic recovery. Production in the life science sector had been fairly resilient, but world events earlier this year dented confidence, leading to a round of

severe rationalisation. The world's biggest pharma, a merger of Pfizer and Pharmacia completed in April, was swiftly followed by site closures wordwide as the enlarged group sought to deliver synergy savings to investors. In mainland Europe, closures have been announced, most recently at Merck KGaA with 320 pharma jobs 'on the block' near Lyon, France.
