Suspect distribution of pharmaceuticals online provides an ideal outlet for rogue manufacturers to sell counterfeit medications to the unsuspecting public with a high degree of anonymity. Internet pharmacies offer privacy, convenience and low prices. The combined impacts on consumer safety and pharmaceutical firms' profitability from Internet-supplied counterfeit products could be devastating.
According to a study prepared for this article, leading pharmaceutical brands promoted heavily online are exposed to suspect distribution on the Internet. This intelligence about suspect distribution of major branded pharmaceutical products is a key indicator of exposure to counterfeit risks. The sample set of five brands examines over 8,000 different websites for product promotions that appeal to lifestyle users or those that may self medicate. The research has also identified links between suspect distribution and extreme Internet activities such as pornography and gambling.
