Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and Packing Sourcer
|
By the time this issue of PMPS reaches your desk, many of our readers will have visited the Bio/PharMOS forum in Monte Carlo in March. Does the interest in this event herald the dawning of a new era in health care delivery? We have seen how developments in biotech research will eventually feed into the depleted pipelines of the pharma companies, which have the financial clout to commercialise on the new product opportunities arising from the biotech sector. With the increasing trend for pharma to outsource earlier in development and to contract out more of its commercial manufacturing, this can only mean that there will be a greater demand for manufacturing capacity offered by the contract houses.
As biopartnering becomes the latest trend, the importance of manufacturing to deliver across a wide spectrum is becoming apparent, especially pharmaceutical development services such as formulation development, analytical testing, QP release and regulatory services. Pharmaceutical development represents a value-added, specialised service for which demand is growing among both biotechnology and large pharmaceutical companies. We would like to hear your opinions and suggestions on the issues raised at the forum and would welcome any articles you wish to publish in our next issue.
The Biotechnology Industry Organisation meeting (BIO 2002) will take place between 3rd and 16th June in Toronto, Canada. I understand that over 15,000 people have pre-registered to visit the exhibition and that 1,000 exhibition booths were taken up eight months ago. I had the opportunity to visit Toronto in February and learn about the innovation in drug discovery, development and manufacturing currently happening in Ontario (see our Country Focus). Outsourcing of manufacturing is a global business. From the other side of the world, we have interesting perspectives on outsourced manufacturing from Muthuswamy Iyer in India and from Bluepharma in Portugal.
