A Day in the Life of a Tablet

The global pharmaceutical industry invests vast amounts of resources in developing, improving and producing tablets. Why do we do this when there are all the potential problems and pitfalls waiting in the wings to challenge the skills and patience of everyone involved with the tabletting production cycle?

The advantages for the industry and the patient requiring medication are widely known:

High production rates
Dry stable product with acceptable shelf life
Easily modified release and performance characteristics
Accurate dosage
Possibility of embossing identification on both sides
Unique shapes

There are also advantages for the patient: tablets are portable, easy to administer, small bulk and any unpleasant tastes or appearances can be masked.
