Located in São Martinho do Bispo, Coimbra in Portugal, is the modern and well-designed manufacturing plant of Bluepharma - a contract pharmaceutical manufacturer. Dr Patricia Lobo, Editor of PMPS visited the plant and spoke to Dr Paulo Barradas Rebelo, CEO; Dr Isolina Mesquita, Director of Operations; and Professor Sérgio Simões, Director of Research and Development about developments at the site and their plans for the future.
Q Bluepharma is new to the contract manufacturing scene. Where did it all start, Isolina?
A It started two years ago when Bayer decided to concentrate (centralise) their production at their main plants and headquarters in Germany. As a result, Bayer advertised in an international magazine that they planned to sell off their manufacturing plant in Coimbra, Portugal. I was the Plant Manager for Bayer's Coimbra plant at that time. Paulo, who has a background in management and logistics, had read about the planned sale and contacted Sérgio, who worked in research and is a Professor at the local university as they knew each other beforehand. They both contacted me and together we set up this company - Bluepharma - in order to acquire the Bayer plant and develop it as an integrated contract manufacturing business.
