I visited Toronto in February at the invitation of the Ontario Government's Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (MEDT) to report on significant developments in the health care industry in Ontario, Canada.
Ontario is Canada's largest province with over 11 million people - 33,000 of these working in the biomedical industry. It has a highly educated and skilled workforce. Ontario's 17 universities produce more than 17,000 graduates a year in maths, engineering, sciences and health professions. Ontario has a number of vibrant medical and academic centres. These areas are located in Toronto, one of North America's largest centres of biomedical activity; Ottawa, with particular strengths in nuclear medicine, cardiovascular devices, biochips, therapeutics and bioinformatics; London, another area of biomedical activity well-known for its expertise in medical imaging; Hamilton, an up-and-coming biomed centre, renowned as a site for clinical research; and Kingston, another emerging biomed centre.
The Toronto area is home to more than 100 biomedical companies, including global leaders like GlaxoSmithKline, Amgen, AstraZeneca, Bayer Corporation, Biogen, Boehringer Ingelheim, Eli Lilly, Novartis, Novopharm, Pfizer, Aventis Pasteur, Biovail Corporation, GE Medical Systems and Johnson & Johnson Medical Products.
