The Supply Chain is No Longer a Weak Link in the Global Pharmaceutical Industry

Modern health, safety and commercial requirements are putting unprecedented pressures on the temperature-controlled supply chain. However, the airfreight industry has made an effective response and new technology is coming to the fore.

Until quite recently, airfreighting pharmaceutical consignments around the world was a rather fraught business. There was a real lack of understanding in the air cargo industry about the need for integrated temperature control, fuelled by inconsistent and too few regulations and relatively poor equipment and temperature solutions.

This is all rather odd, considering that leading pharmaceutical companies typically invest hundreds of millions of dollars into the research, development and patenting of new products, a process that, from start to finish, takes an average of eight to 10 years. It was also rather strange that while the pharmaceutical production process was subject to some extremely tight regulations, nobody had thought to consider what happened to products when they were in transit.

The range of pharmaceutical and biotechnological products requiring stable, temperature-controlled shipment is increasing all the time. Products are becoming more valuable in monetary terms due to the in-depth research and manufacturing processes, hence the list of regulations from bodies such as the US Food and Drug Administration (which has a great deal of influence outside the borders of the US), the Medicines Controls Agency in the UK or the European Medicines Evaluation Agency is growing all the time. For example, adverse temperatures can cause proteins to denature, and can render the product useless, or even dangerous.
