Getting Cost Out of the Cold Chain and Added Value In

Our cold chain business is very much one of sticks and carrots. The latest truly ground breaking development in cold chain insulated shipping systems for pharmaceutical products - the introduction of the off-the-shelf validated unit - is a splendid example of this. The carrot is that for the first time, validated shipping systems are now accessible to even the smallest of manufacturers. The stick is that with the introduction of new technologies and developments such as these, the regulatory bodies will sooner or later probably insist that everybody use them.

The whole history of this sector has been one of a steady ratcheting-up of performance in this way, which is no bad thing. This is because the efficacy of temperature-sensitive medicinal products may be compromised if they are permitted to remain outside of their specified temperature band for too long. In the past, when suppliers served more or less local or regional markets, this was not such a great problem. Today, as a result of the globalisation process amongst pharmaceutical manufacturers, the end user is as often as not, located further away from the point of manufacture than ever before. This in turn has created a demand for new technologies in packaging to provide higher performance and minimise the additional shipping costs created by this ever-extending cold chain.
