Significant Growth in the Sales of Herbal Products
Sales of herbal medicines have shown significant growth over the last decade, both in Europe and the US. With an increasingly ageing population, and with more people becoming interested in natural products, it is not difficult to see why retail sales of products such as Echinacea for cold and flu remedies, and Valerian for sleep disorders, have increased over the last few years. The amount of scientific evidence and well-documented phytomedicines has also had a significant impact on the growth of the market.
Following this period of rapid growth, consumers are becoming more knowledgeable and discerning and are beginning to question why some brands appear to work better than others. This has been supported by consumer associations randomly testing products to see if they contain what is stated on the label. In the US, such a test was recently carried out by ConsumerLab.com on brands of Echinacea, a herb commonly used to reduce the symptoms of colds and flu. Over 25 per cent of the products evaluated failed the test and either did not contain the expected levels of markers or contained other ingredients altogether.
