Aluminium foil (alufoil) has been a primary material used in the protective packaging of pharmaceutical tablets since the introduction of the double-sided 'strip' pack in the 1950s. Since then, it has been an important means of protection and single unit presentation of compressed tablets and, more recently, of an enormous variety of new pharmaceutical products.
As medical and pharmaceutical science progresses, so must the packaging solutions essential to the task of delivering drugs to the point of use. A good example of this is the use of an alufoil laminated blister pack as a mould for forming tablets which are dosed into the foil tray in aqueous form and then freeze dried. Increasing demands for tamper evidence, anti-counterfeit measures and child-resistant access are all being successfully addressed by alufoil-based packaging.
