Aluminium Foil - A Versatile Tool for Pharmaceutical Packaging

Aluminium foil (alufoil) has been a primary material used in the protective packaging of pharmaceutical tablets since the introduction of the double-sided 'strip' pack in the 1950s. Since then, it has been an important means of protection and single unit presentation of compressed tablets and, more recently, of an enormous variety of new pharmaceutical products.

As medical and pharmaceutical science progresses, so must the packaging solutions essential to the task of delivering drugs to the point of use. A good example of this is the use of an alufoil laminated blister pack as a mould for forming tablets which are dosed into the foil tray in aqueous form and then freeze dried. Increasing demands for tamper evidence, anti-counterfeit measures and child-resistant access are all being successfully addressed by alufoil-based packaging.

(GDA - the German Aluminium Industry Association) since 1992. He was appointed Secretary General of the European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA) in 2000 having also worked with that association for several years.
He has previously been active in various capacities at the Wirtschaftvereinigung Metalle e.V. (WVM - the German Metals Federation), the European Aluminium Association (EAA) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
