Soft and Hard Capsules
The manufacturing of hard and soft gelatine capsules is an exacting operation that requires specific conditions to ensure the highest quality of the final product. Some of the many variables that must be dealt with include: gelatine concentration and viscosity; air temperature and humidity; lubrication of pins; stripping and cutting of capsules; inspection and sorting. When the ideal combination of all these factors is met, an acceptable, good quality capsule is produced.
Among these specific variables, manufacturers must deal with air, specifically in terms of temperature and humidity. Proper humidity control is essential during the manufacturing and drying of hard and soft capsules. Air goes directly onto the product and the quality and relative humidity of the air is extremely important.
It is essential to maintain the humidity as closely as possible to the required space conditions with very little variation, as variation in the humidity can cause a variety of problems. Under high humidity conditions, gelatine capsules do not dry properly; in an atmosphere that is too dry, they become hard and brittle. Ideal conditions are consistent humidity and temperature control.
