Filling Systems for Inhalant Powders - Trends and Challenges

There is an increasing demand to develop new drug delivery systems in order to create a wider palette of possibilities for delivering medicaments to the patient. Of these, the inhalation of micronised powders, where a predetermined dose is inhaled into the lungs or passes over the nasal mucous membrane en route to the bloodstream is a major developing area. This article will address the challenges that face the packaging and device industry when developing systems for the new generations of micronised inhaler powder drug delivery systems.

Developers of inhalation devices, powder formulators and suppliers of powder dosing systems and inhalator assembly systems need to work together to be successful. To bring such technically demanding projects in on time and to budget requires considerable team work - not just in theory, but in practice - between the various parties.

Typically the development department of a pharmaceutical company will need to work with its regulatory and quality functions, its manufacturing operation and designers and suppliers of the various components and packaging materials. It is helpful that the machine supplier is able to provide a complete machinery package - from powder filling through to assembly - to focus on the interactions within the machinery system. A good working relationship is essential if the delivery system is to complement the pharmaceutical product.
