This year we experienced the final Interphex show at the NEC, Birmingham. In 2004, there will be another show organised by Reed Exhibitions, but more about that later.
In comparison to previous Interphex events, this year's show appeared to be smaller but cosier - there were approximately 160 high quality exhibitors. Interphex, which is supported by the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineers (ISPE) caters for everyone from researchers through to pack technologists.
There were some interesting exhibitions in the biotech area at this event. For example, Amersham Biosciences, whose products are used to uncover the function of genes and proteins for the discovery and development of drugs and for the manufacture of biopharmaceuticals; and Biopharma Group - a company providing technology and process equipment primarily for the pharmaceutical and biotech industries, including freeze-dryers and freeze-drying analytical equipment.
The organisers of Interphex said that despite cautious trading conditions in the marketplace and a further reduction in the number of potential visiting companies following continued industry consolidation, Interphex 2002 attracted similar visitor numbers to the previous event in 2000 when some 2,500 attended. Visitors included senior technical and commercial staff from Big Pharma, as well as the generic and contract sectors and the growing biotechnology industry. Consultant engineers were also present, keeping themselves up-to-date with the latest technologies and equipment.
