Editor's Letter

The ups and downs of stock market turbulence - timed to coincide with the Summer vacation - makes the current bear market, now in its third year, feel as if the gloom will go on for ever. Analysts' assessment of manufacturing has gone from signalling a recovery followed by more gloom and then cautious optimism.

Seen from an Editor's perspective, the manufacturing sector of pharma and biotech seems to have weathered the storm somewhat better than other industries. The only thing restraining anyone from shouting out too loudly is a sense of not wanting to give hostages to fortune. Colleagues in the arena for outsourced manufacturing services continue to beaver away with quiet confidence.


This issue of PMPS will be published in the run-up to the annual CPhI/ICSE show to be held in Paris (1st-3rd October 2002). While this event is the meeting place for those involved in pharmaceutical manufacturing (especially of APIs), this year also sees Paris hosting Emballage on 18th-22nd November. Emballage 2002 is a major packaging exhibition with a section focused on packaging for the pharmaceutical industry. France, it should be noted, is a major market for pharmaceuticals and boasts a fine chemicals industry responsible for €3.7 billion, employing over 20,000.
