Ease of verification combined with complex origination technology has earned diffractive optically variable devices (OVDs) an unrivalled reputation for the high level protection of brand name products in the pharmaceuticals sector.
Counterfeiting and brand piracy are two of the most common forms of fraud in today's increasingly sophisticated consumer society. Despite more elaborate manufacturing controls, licensing and distribution arrangements, the pharmaceuticals business is not immune to these problems, with product copying, passing off, illicit tampering and substitution of ingredients all being examples of the types of illegal practices affecting the industry.
As a result, the counterfeiting of pharmaceuticals and medical products not only poses a risk to corporate profits and reputations, but, more importantly, can also threaten the health and safety of consumers.
Although difficult to quantify on a global basis, pharmaceutical counterfeiting is now a worldwide phenomenon. As long ago as 1988 the Association Européene des Industries de Produits de Marque (AIM) estimated that fake drugs cost genuine manufacturers £50 million in lost sales.
