Drug Packaging Solutions for the 21st Century

Identifying effective and innovative delivery systems and components for injectable drugs - whether a serum, a lyophilised drug or a dry powder - is a challenge for pharmaceutical manufacturers. Once vial selection and labelling have been determined, packaging engineers must then turn their attention to closure systems, where new technologies have advanced the opportunity for increased decoration, identification and differentiation. Because of reported counterfeit activity around the world, the need for unique closure systems has become a key consideration. The new technologies include protective measures involving an aluminium seal in combination with a protective plastic button.The Scourge of Drug CounterfeitingDrug counterfeiting has become a serious threat to the ethical pharmaceutical industry, with global implications. Although more prevalent in developing countries where regulatory powers are limited, no country is immune to the threat of drug counterfeiting. Not only do counterfeit drugs inhibit a patient's recovery, in some instances counterfeit drugs have been fatal.
