How did you come to move to Scotland from the US?
When I joined Sigma in 1992, the company was looking for a cell culture media manufacturing facility in Europe. We already had a manufacturing facility in St. Louis, but you cannot successfully serve a European market from the US. We had two options - to buy a facility that was already up and running, if available, or to build one on a greenfield site next to our operations in Gillingham, Dorset. At the same time, ICN Biomedicals was looking for a buyer for its plant in Scotland, which was also in the business of making cell culture media, otherwise they planned to shut it down. ICN had acquired the facility from Flow Laboratories - an American company - which had originally started producing cell culture media in Scotland in the mid-60s, but had run into significant financial and regulatory
difficulties by the mid-80s.
After visiting the site with a team from St. Louis, we made a recommendation to our management to buy the Scottish facility from ICN. As my first assignment with Sigma, I was asked to handle the acquisition of the Irvine plant for the company on the provision that once the transaction was successfully completed, I would move to
Scotland and manage the operation, which is what happened.
