Sleep expert joins LCG Bioscience to build new facility

LCG Bioscience

"There are 89 recognised sleep disorders, and at any one time, around 30-35% of the population suffer from the most common of these - insomnia," says Martin King.

"There are many causes of insomnia and the medical and economic consequences are well documented. However many sufferers simply accept their symptoms, and try to mitigate the effects during periods of wakefulness by using 'alerting compounds' such as caffeine rather than seeking medical help to treat the cause of their problems.

"Doctors and drug companies are realising the importance of new safe, effective treatment for these people's heath and wellbeing. The new LCG sleep laboratory will provide a dependable, proven environment in which to test compounds that can help this neglected group of sufferers."

Martin King, the former Head of the Sleep Laboratory at PapworthHospital, has an extensive knowledge of diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders and has been actively involved in professional sleep societies for many years. He has developed techniques to accurately diagnose and quantify sleep disorders, and has seen huge numbers of patients. He has participated in the development of international measurement standards and has collaborated with researchers across Europe and the USA.

The new facility at LCG Bioscience will include sophisticated, state-of-the-art equipment that will be used to monitor electrophysiology in order to accurately describe patterns of sleep in both healthy volunteers and patients.

As well as investigating treatments for the commonest sleep disorders, LCG will be able to draw on its links with consultants such as neurologists to recruit patients from specific disease groups for targeted clinical trials.

"Parkinson's disease patients often suffer severe sleep disruption due to depression, the disease process, and medication used to treat their symptoms," says Martin King. "LCG already has strong relationships with practitioners in appropriate disciplines to help enlist sufferers for trials. We also have the medical and nursing experience to care for patients whilst delivering high quality research.

"A number of drugs targeted at other medical conditions also have profound effects on sleep. We have the potential in the new facility to investigate these disturbances in a thorough, scientific way, and the experience and expertise to deliver results on time.

"At present, most sleep studies are conducted in mainland Europe and North America. We hope that in launching this cutting-edge facility we will be able to make the UK a world leader in the development and evaluation of drugs used to improve sleep and daytime functioning."
